Our response to the Spring statement

Spinal Injuries Association is deeply concerned about the welfare cuts announced in the Spring statement.

These measures disproportionately affect disabled individuals, including those with spinal cord injuries, by reducing essential financial support and increasing barriers to independence.

Cuts to the Universal Credit health element, which will be halved and frozen for new claimants, represent a significant step backwards in ensuring equality and fairness. Additionally, the tightening of eligibility criteria for Personal Independence Payments will mean that 800,000 people will lose access to the daily living component, further marginalising disabled individuals and pushing many into poverty.

We urge the government to reconsider these harmful policies and prioritise a fair, compassionate approach that upholds the rights and dignity of disabled people.

We can and we must do better.
