Real lives, real stories

SIA Member, William Towler

In July 2021 I was involved in an accident on the farm, causing an incomplete spinal cord injury at the 12th thoracic vertebra. I was treated at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and this is where I met Spinal Injuries Association support coordinator Kevin, for the first time.

It was amazing to see Kevin come through the door by himself and shut it behind him! We talked about the impact of my injury on my family, and how to get back into work. Kevin helped me understand catheters, bowel management and all the major stuff relating to a spinal cord injury. The nurses know the medical side but not the everyday stuff, so it was good to speak to someone that had an injury and knew all the answers.

I am very independent now, I drive and can do my own thing without relying on other people. I use SIA Healthcare for my catheter supplies, receive emails from SIA and enjoy reading their FORWARD magazine too. In June 2024 I was delighted to attend the Rebuilding Lives conference to show the delegates my exoskeleton.
