On New Year’s Day in 2020, I sustained a spinal cord injury in a horrific motorcycle accident. I was left in a coma and extremely lucky to be alive. When I woke up, I was told the extent of my injuries and that I would never walk again.
During my rehabilitation, I met one of SIA’s support network manager’s, Gary. He had also sustained a spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident, and it was so helpful to talk to someone who could relate to what I was going through and offer advice, based on his lived experience.
To try and address my pressure ulcer issue, I contacted SIA to ask for support from their SCI clinical specialist team. I was put in touch with Damian. He was so knowledgeable. He talked me through the different steps I could take to reduce the risk of pressure ulcers and together we drafted an Emergency Care Plan.
The support of people like Gary and Damian has enabled me to adjust to all the changes of life after injury. With their support, I get to do more of the things that I love, like spending time with my family, and getting to be me again.”
